Sara Decker ist Jazzsängerin, Komponistin und Bandleaderin. Ihre Musik verbindet melodisches Songwriting mit der Freiheit des improvisierten Jazz. Sie studierte in Maastricht und als Fulbright-Stipendiatin an der Manhattan School of Music in New York. 2017 erhielt sie den zweiten Preis beim Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. Nach „Long Distance“ und „poetryfied“ erschien 2024 ihr drittes Album „Expand“ bei Unit Records. 2026 präsentierte sie das Projekt beim jazzahead!-Showcase in Bremen.
Sara Decker ist Jazzsängerin, Komponistin und Bandleaderin. In ihrer Musik treffen melodische Songs auf rhythmische Vielfalt und improvisatorische Freiheit. Ihre Stimme und ihre eigenen Texte stehen dabei ebenso im Mittelpunkt wie das Zusammenspiel mit ihren Ensembles.
Nach ihrem Jazzgesangsstudium in Maastricht führte sie ein Fulbright-Stipendium an die Manhattan School of Music in New York. Dort studierte sie unter anderem bei Gretchen Parlato, Theo Bleckmann und Kate McGarry. 2015 gewann sie den European Jazz Award in Italien, 2017 folgte der zweite Preis beim Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. Mit der Academy Band unter der Leitung von Bugge Wesseltoft eröffnete sie 2018 in Montreux für das Chick Corea Trio.
Ihr Debüt „Long Distance“ erschien 2017 und wurde im Systems Two Studio in Brooklyn aufgenommen. Für „poetryfied“ (AMC Records, 2020) vertonte sie Gedichte von Rainer Maria Rilke, Mascha Kaléko, Jane Tyson Clement und Emily Dickinson. Das Album entstand mit ihrem Kölner Quartett um Billy Test, Nicolai Amrehn und Jeroen Truyen.
Mit „Expand“ (Unit Records, 2024) erweiterte Decker ihre Musik zu einem transatlantischen Quintett. Auf dem Album sind Heidi Bayer an Trompete und Flügelhorn, Yuhan Su am Vibraphon, Kaisa Mäensivu am Bass und Mareike Wiening am Schlagzeug zu hören. 2026 war Sara Decker mit „Expand“ im German-Jazz-Expo-Showcaseprogramm der jazzahead! vertreten. Im Juli desselben Jahres spielte sie mit ihrem Ensemble beim Jazzkonzert von Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier im Park der Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn.

Mit „Expand“ bringt Jazzsängerin und Komponistin Sara Decker melodisches Songwriting und die Offenheit des Jazz zusammen. Stimme, Trompete, Vibraphon, Bass und Schlagzeug bilden einen beweglichen Ensembleklang, in dem persönliche Geschichten ebenso Platz finden wie instrumentale Dialoge. Das Programm reicht von intimen Begegnungen bis zum Zusammenspiel des gesamten Quintetts.
Das gleichnamige Album erschien 2024 bei Unit Records. 2026 präsentierte Decker „Expand“ im German-Jazz-Expo-Showcaseprogramm der jazzahead! in Bremen. Die Fulbright-Stipendiatin und Preisträgerin des Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition verbindet in diesem Projekt ihre musikalischen Erfahrungen aus Deutschland und New York.
Sara Decker is a jazz vocalist, composer and bandleader whose music brings melodic songwriting together with jazz improvisation. She studied in Maastricht and, supported by a Fulbright scholarship, at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. In 2017 she won second prize at the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition. Following Long Distance and poetryfied, her third album, Expand, was released by Unit Records in 2024. She presented the project at the jazzahead! showcase in Bremen in 2026.

In 2018 she performed with the Academy Band under Bugge Wesseltoft, opening for the Chick Corea Trio in Montreux.
Her debut album, Long Distance, was recorded at Systems Two Studio in Brooklyn and released in 2017. For poetryfied (AMC Records, 2020), she composed music to poems by Rainer Maria Rilke, Mascha Kaléko, Jane Tyson Clement and Emily Dickinson. The album features her Cologne quartet with Billy Test, Nicolai Amrehn and Jeroen Truyen.
Expand (Unit Records, 2024) broadened her work into a transatlantic quintet. The album features Heidi Bayer on trumpet and flugelhorn, Yuhan Su on vibraphone, Kaisa Mäensivu on bass and Mareike Wiening on drums. In 2026 Decker presented Expand in the German Jazz Expo showcase programme at jazzahead! in Bremen. That July, she and her ensemble performed at Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s jazz concert in the park of Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn.

With Expand, jazz vocalist and composer Sara Decker brings melodic songwriting into conversation with the openness of jazz. Voice, trumpet, vibraphone, bass and drums form a flexible ensemble sound, creating space for personal stories and instrumental dialogue. The programme moves between intimate exchanges and the full sound of the quintet.
The album Expand was released by Unit Records in 2024. In 2026 Decker presented the project in the German Jazz Expo showcase programme at jazzahead! in Bremen. A Fulbright scholar and prizewinner at the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, she draws on musical experiences from Germany and New York.
